KAZAKHSTAN


CITIZENSHIP: Citizenship laws are based upon the Law on Citizenship for the Republic of Kazakhstan, dated March 1, 1992.

BY BIRTH: Birth within the territory of Kazakhstan does not automatically confer citizenship. The exception is a child born of unknown or stateless parents.

BY DESCENT: Person born in Kazakhstan before March 1, 1992, who has maintained residence in the country. Child of a Kazak mother or father, regardless of the child's country of birth.

OTHER: Child born abroad, whose mother or father has legal permanent residency in Kazakhstan.

BY NATURALIZATION: Kazak citizenship may be acquired upon fulfillment of the following conditions: Person is familiar with the language, has renounced former citizenship, and has made formal application for citizenship to either the Kazak Embassy or the Foreign Ministry in Kazakhstan.


DUAL CITIZENSHIP: NOT RECOGNIZED. Exception: There are possible future dual citizenship agreements with some former Soviet Republics. Contact the Embassy for more information.


LOSS OF CITIZENSHIP:

VOLUNTARY: Voluntary renunciation of Kazak citizenship is permitted under the law. Contact Kazakhstan Embassy for details and required paperwork.

INVOLUNTARY: The following is grounds for involuntary renunciation of Kazak citizenship: Person voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship.
